Architectural Driving Tour - Arkansas (Pt2)

THE GLASS CHAPELS OF ARKANSAS by E. FAY JONES

(Excerpt 2)

As mentioned in my previous blog update, Debra and I are on a brief vacation with friends from Dallas - on a driving tour of Arkansas - The official theme of the trip: The Glass Chapels of Arkansas by E. Fay Jones. We visited Thorncrown Chapel and Worship Center on Day 3 of our Architectural Driving Tour of Arkansas.

An interesting history: It was commissioned by a husband and wife who retired to Eureka Springs.  They were both school teachers, who were led to commission E. Fay Jones to design the chapel for them.  At about 50% completion they ran out of funds and were set to walk away from their dream.  Their son tells the story that his father entered the incomplete chapel, fell to his knees and asked for God’s intercession and guidance.  That same day he was approached by a lady from Chicago who provided a loan to allow completion.  A story of intercession and redemption.

We planned our trip to place us at Thorncrown for the 11am service.  The pastor is the son of the original owner.  It was certainly a special experience to worship in that space with windows to God’s creation and to experience the Holy Spirit among us.

The beautiful Thorncrown Worship Center seats 300 guests; more than twice that of Thorn Crown Chapel.
